Wind Mitigation Inspections

HomeWind Mitigation Inspections

A wind mitigation inspection documents the storm-resistant features of your home so your insurance company can apply the wind credits Florida law entitles you to. Most South Florida homeowners who have never had one are overpaying — often by hundreds, sometimes thousands of dollars a year.

SeaBreeze Roofing performs wind mitigation inspections across Palm Beach and Broward County as a State-Certified General Contractor (CGC-1521632) and Roofing Contractor (CCC-1328689). We complete the state’s OIR-B1-1802 form with photo documentation, signed and ready to hand to your insurance agent.

Why it cuts your premium

Florida Statute 627.0629 requires insurers to give premium credits for construction features that reduce hurricane damage. The credits apply to the windstorm portion of your premium — in South Florida, that’s usually the biggest piece of the bill. The inspection typically pays for itself many times over in the first year, and the form is generally good for up to five years.

The 7 things we document

1. Building code era

When your home was permitted — homes built to the 2002+ Florida Building Code earn stronger credits.

2. Roof covering

Whether your tile, metal, or shingle roof was installed to current FBC product approvals.

3. Roof deck attachment

Nail size and spacing holding your roof deck down — a big credit driver.

4. Roof-to-wall connection

Toe nails, clips, single or double wraps — how your roof structure is anchored to the walls.

5. Roof geometry

Hip roofs (sloped on all sides) qualify for one of the largest single credits on the form.

6. Secondary water resistance

Peel-and-stick underlayment or sealed deck that keeps water out if the covering blows off.

7. Opening protection

Impact windows, rated shutters, and garage doors protecting every opening.

Just got a new roof? Get re-inspected.

A reroof is the single best time for a wind mitigation inspection. New covering, new deck nailing, and secondary water resistance are exactly what insurers credit — many homeowners see their biggest premium drop right after replacement. If we installed your roof, the documentation is already in our file.

Common questions

How much can I actually save?

It depends on your home’s features and insurer, but credits commonly reduce the wind portion of the premium by hundreds to thousands of dollars per year. Homes with hip roofs, newer roofs, and impact protection see the largest reductions.

How long is the report valid?

Insurers generally accept a wind mitigation form for up to five years, or until the home changes — a reroof or new impact windows is a reason to update it early and capture new credits.

Do I need one for a new policy?

It’s not mandatory, but without it your insurer rates the home as if it has no mitigation features — you pay the maximum wind rate by default.
